Hello to the ex-Tottenham Hotspur stalwart!

Dear Gary,
As a once great footballer (that is you, not I!), could you help me with an enquiry? My friend George (more a fan of dead ball sports) and I were having an argument over what exactly constitutes the off-side rule. He insists that the ball must be within one cubit of the last remaining defender when a pass is made between two members of the attacking team. I suggest that cubits are outdated in the modern form of the game.
Any further reading you could suggest would be more helpful.
Yours,
